The only time I thought I’d ever be subjected to 104 degrees would be as a result of a high fever or sauna heat. There is a reason why saunas have pregnancy warnings and a reason to avoid being sick while incubating a baby…so when Jon convinced me to spend our Labor Day in Escondido, CA at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, I reluctantly obliged. Somehow, I thought if we went past noon, the weather would cool down and I’d be able to withstand the heat. We left the house, thermometer reading 80 degrees and slowly watched the temperature rise up to 86 degrees. Then 99 degrees. Then, a final 104 degrees in the parking lot of the Park . Four hours later, my arms, legs and cheeks were flushed a rosy red, my eyes heavy with exhaustion and my legs buzzing with soreness. But, the good part is, we felt like we definitely got away. Like a mini-vacation to Africa, I guess you couldn’t have asked for anything better on a day off from work. And I survived without fainting, falling or having any unpredictable contractions. Whew.
